Altiplano’s clothing has the highest level of sustainable qualities of any clothing in production today.
Llama fabric has a naturally soft handle, will not mat or pill, it is hypoallergenic and phenomenally resistant to UV light. It is flame retardant and heat stable so it will not melt or support a flame. The fabric is acid and chemical resistant as well as abrasion resistant. The fiber has a high tensile strength, yet is completely biodegradable. Our garments endure while you wear them, not after they are retired.
Hand shorn, milled and processed by the aymara natives
Aymara herders hand shear their llamas annually to gather the all-natural fiber. Llamas have subsisted for centuries on the sparse forage that dominates the altiplano and require no supplemental feed or inputs.
Nature Works
That is the underlying principle that makes our clothing the most sustainable clothing on the market. The natural properties of llama fiber naturally address or eliminate sustainability issues common to most clothing.
Small Footprint
Low Impact Cleaning
The garments don’t carry odors and are naturally antimicrobial. They are highly stain resistant, don’t hold static electricity, are naturally clean, and require infrequent laundering.
No Super Washing
Naturally soft handle doesn’t require alteration of the fiber surface to reduce prickle or eliminate shrinkage.
Biodegradable Soap
The fiber is cleaned with biodegradable soap and the wash water is recycled.
Recycling water
Our processing mill is WRAP certified.
No Added Cleaning Agents
The fiber has no lanolin and requires no scouring agents that can act as pollutants and/or allergens.
low impact Supply Chain Distribution and marketing practices
Two Stop Supply Chain Distribution
If Altiplano clothing travels around the world, it will be on someone’s back, not in a shipping container. Local processing and manufacturing and direct sales minimize shipping impacts. The production comes to our warehouse from the altiplano and is distributed from our warehouse and ranch store. This limits the transport of a garment to two trips: altiplano/Masonville and Masonville/consumer.
Paperless Business & Marketing Practices
Altiplano sells its products almost exclusively online ensuring efficient inventory management and distribution. Our marketing is limited to online promotion, thus greatly limiting the printing and distribution of catalogs and print media.
